Washington State Introduces Revised Lead Content in Cookware under SB 5628

On May 13, 2025, the Governor of Washington State, USA, signed Senate Bill 5628, amending the original act HB 1551 to limit lead content in cookware, which will officially take effect on January 1, 2026.

Definitions Related to SB-5628 Act:

- Aluminum or Brass Cookware: Items made of brass or aluminum: pots, pans, kettles, round-bottomed woks, griddles, the inner pots of electric rice cookers or pressure cookers, and similar containers or surfaces used for cooking food

- Aluminum or Brass Cookware Components: Components of cookware made of aluminum or brass, such as lids, rivets, fasteners, valves, and vents

- Aluminum or Brass Utensils: Tools made of aluminum or brass, such as knives, forks, spoons, spatulas, and similar implements used for preparing, serving, or consuming food, unless such implements are fully encased in stainless steel
