Korea Proposes to Amend Safety Standard for Children's Furniture

On 10 October 2025, the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE 산업통상자원부) published the Announcement number 2025-020, titled “Administrative Notice on the Draft Amendment to Appendix 14 (Children's Furniture) of the Supplier Conformity Verification for Children's Products with Individual Safety Standards”. This announcement proposes, besides correction of some typographical errors, updates or revisions of some standards with latest versions.

 

Substantial Changes

Reference standards

  •          Removes KS K 0210: “Test Method for Fiber Blending Ratios – Fiber Blending Ratio”
  •          Renames KS M 1998: “Measurement of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Building Interior Materials”
  •          Adds missing standard KS K ISO 105-C10: “Textiles – Colour fastness tests – Part C10: Colour fastness to soap or soap and soda washing”

Amendment to Clause 5 “Safety Requirements, Table 2, Note 5”

  •          Note 5. applies only to dyed products. The target materials comply with safety standards under the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Goods Safety Management Act, Appendix B of Safety Standards Annex 1 (Household Textile Products), KS K 0739

Amendments to the following subclauses of Clause 6.9 Hazardous Substances:

  •          6.9.1 Chlorinated Phenols (PCP) Supplier Conformity Confirmation: Follow the requirements for children’s leather products
  •          6.9.2 Hexavalent Chromium Supplier Conformity Confirmation: Follow the requirements for children’s leather products
  •          6.9.3 Dimethyl Fumarate Safety Confirmation: Follow the requirements for children’s textile products
  •          6.9.4 Arylamine Safety Standards: Compliance with the Safety Standards in accordance with the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Goods Safety Management Act. Safety Standards Annex 1 (Household Textile Products) Appendix B. Test Methods for Arylamines in Dyes and Dyeing Materials, KS K 0739
  •          6.9.5 Formaldehyde Safety Confirmation for Textiles: Comply with the requirements for children’s leather products.
  •          6.9.7 Colour fastness: Follow KS K ISO 105-C10
  •          6.9.8 Formaldehyde emission, toluene emission, and total volatile organic compound emission from wood materials: Follow KS M 1998. However, in the small chamber method, the concentration of air in the test chamber is measured by capturing it 7 days (168 hours ± 2 hours) after the start of the test
