Canada Children’s Jewellery Regulations

2017-03-28

Health Canada proposed on December 3, 2016 to amend the Children’s Jewellery Regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) by revising the limit of lead content and adding new limit requirements of cadmium content on children’s jewellery intended for children under 15 years of age. According to the proposal, children’s jewellery shall comply with the following new requirements: a) Children’s jewellery must not contain more than 90mg/kg of lead; b) Children’s jewellery must not contain more than 130mg/kg of cadmium if the jewellery item is small enough to fit in the small part cylinder under a force of not more than 4.45N. The proposed new regulations are considered a safer protection for children under the age of 15 years against adverse health risks posed by lead and cadmium in children’s jewellery. Adoption of the new proposal should also mean simultaneous compliance with the US CPSIA for lead content and the voluntary standard ASTM F2923-14 for migratable cadmium limit.
